Why do elections in Africa often lead to violent conflict?

Things I inexplicably like part 2:
Reference books…I really really don’t know why. I just love them.

In a totally non-romantic way, I couldn’t agree more. You two know who you are.

So I’m back in the states after 5 months in Ghana and I have the most insane jet lag I’ve ever experienced. At first I thought I didn’t have any jet lag at all but then I realized that I was just not tired at all.
So I’ve naturally tossed myself into American television. One episode of Dollhouse’s second season and I’m obsessed. Not that I wasn’t before. First of all, Tahmoh Penikett is a hot as his name is bizarrely wonderful and there is a wonderful cast. Most importantly though, I’m incredibly in love with the man above. I don’t know what it is about Fran Kranz (besides the preposterousness of that name)…I just love it all.

So true, although I obviously don’t have to be drunk…at all….hah but man, being in a totally new place just makes me want to go to more and more new places!!
for bets.

Okay I totally shouldn’t be tumbling from Africa but I’m waiting for my goddamned Computer to update (among the many things I miss most about America - wireless that goes faster than my grandmother) and so I thought I’d stalk my friend from here…and found this and fell in love it it. I too hope this will happen to you.

I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day. - E. B. White
This quote couldn’t more emphatically express how I’ve been feeling since I arrived in Ghana. Ghana is, by many people’s opinion, the shining example of Africa. Even still, I am reminded each and every day of how lucky we have it in the US. Kids play, eat, and sleep in what could most generously be termed as closets taken out of the home just outside my dorm. I regularly don’t have running water and almost never have internet. I go to the best university in Ghana. Tuition to this university is 4,000 Cedi (1.5 Cedi to a US dollar) for 4 years plus a year of service following graduation of Bachelors or graduate programs. Please remember this: we live in inordinate wealth and pleasure. Do not let that blessing go to waste. Instead of buying that little extra thing that isn’t even on the radar much less a reality for these kids, look into what you can do to give back - either to your community or the world. This doesn’t always mean money but what I’ve realized is that here, it most often does. Children beg constantly for money to pay their school fees. Sponsor one child for a year, even a semester, and you will have changed a child’s life. Approximately 60% of girls here, in this shining example of development, drop out of school after 6th grade in order to help make ends meet for the family. Just consider it, and please, never forget how lucky we all are.

Another place I hope to visit during the summer following graduation: Thailand
